Not following back

Who doesn't follow you back on Instagram

Instagram shows two counts and no way to compare them. Upload the followers export Instagram already gives you and FindUnfollower lists every account you follow that isn't following you back, in about two minutes.

What you get

Three lists from one export

A single export answers the reciprocity question completely. Nothing here depends on a second upload.

  • Non-followers

Accounts you follow that do not follow you back right now. This is the list most people come for, with search, a Viewed / Not viewed toggle and notes so you can work through it over several sessions.

  • Fans

Accounts that follow you while you don't follow them back. Useful when you want to return the follow, or simply to see who is quietly supporting you.

  • Mutuals and pending

Everyone you follow each other with, plus follow requests you sent that were never accepted (private accounts).

  • What a single export cannot tell you

Whether someone used to follow you and left. That needs a second export to compare against; see the unfollower tracker page for how that works.

How the check works

Your following list minus your followers list

Instagram lets every account download its own data, including two plain lists: who you follow and who follows you. FindUnfollower reads exactly those two files and does the comparison Instagram never shows: everyone in following who is missing from followers is a non-follower.

  1. Request the export in the Instagram app: Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information. Tick only Followers and following and set the date range to All time. The step-by-step guide with screenshots is inside the app.
  2. Drop the ZIP on the upload page. Your browser picks out the followers folder and sends only that, usually well under a megabyte. Photos, messages and everything else never leave your device, and the uploaded file is deleted as soon as it has been parsed.
  3. Read your lists. The free plan unlocks the first three non-followers.

Two mistakes that make the numbers look wrong

The date range. Instagram's export defaults to “Last year”, which drops everyone who followed you earlier from the followers file while the following file stays complete. Suddenly hundreds of real followers look like non-followers. FindUnfollower detects a truncated export and warns you before showing numbers; re-request it with All time and the count corrects itself.

Brands and celebrities. Accounts that never follow anyone back are non-followers by definition. Use the whitelist to hide the ones you follow on purpose so the list only contains people you actually expected to follow you.

Why not just use an app that logs in for you?

Because that is the behaviour Instagram's terms prohibit and its systems look for. Third-party logins are the usual cause of “suspicious activity” warnings and temporary blocks. Reading your own export cannot trigger any of that: Instagram produced the file for you, and nothing ever touches your account.
