Instagram follow-back checker
Open your Instagram export and see, in seconds, how many accounts you follow don't follow you back, how many fans you have and how many mutuals, with the first names of each list. The full lists are part of Pro.
The ZIP from Instagram, or a single followers / following file (JSON or HTML)
Read in your browser. The file is not uploaded, nothing is stored, and no Instagram login is involved.
Preview: the totals and the first 3 names of each list. Full lists, search and CSV come with Pro.
How the follow-back check works
Instagram's export contains two plain lists: followers_1.json (split into followers_2.json and more for large accounts) and following.json, or the same as HTML. This tool merges the follower files, normalises every username (lower case, no “@”, no duplicates) and compares the two sets:
- Not following back = in following, missing from followers.
- Fans = in followers, missing from following.
- Mutuals = in both.
Get the right export
- Instagram app → profile → menu → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions.
- Export your information → Export to device → pick the account.
- Customise information: tick only Followers and following. Date range: All time. Format: JSON or HTML (both work).
- When Instagram emails you, download the ZIP and drop it above without unzipping it.
The full illustrated walk-through is in the export guide.
Limits worth knowing
The result is exactly as current as your export. Accounts that were deactivated after the export still appear, and someone who followed you after you downloaded it will not. Brands and celebrities never follow back, so expect them in the first list.
Follow-back checker questions
Does this show who unfollowed me?
No, and no tool can from a single export. An export is a snapshot of who follows you today. To see who left, you need an older snapshot to compare against. The account health checker on this site compares two exports in your browser, and the FindUnfollower app keeps every upload so the comparison happens automatically.
Why do some people I know follow me appear as not following back?
Almost always the export was requested with the date range on “Last year” instead of “All time”. That trims the followers file but not the following file. Request the export again with All time and the list corrects itself.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The ZIP is opened by JavaScript in this tab, only the followers and following files are decompressed, and the result disappears when you close the page. The tool sends an anonymous usage event with counts, never usernames.
Do I have to log in to Instagram or give my password?
Never. You download your own data from Instagram (Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information) and open it here. Nothing ever connects to your account.
